Cage or cage-free?
A cage keeps you at the surface in a floating enclosure while the sharks circle. It suits first-timers and families, and on one tour anyone who changes their mind can watch from the boat. Cage-free means open water with a guide, and it is meant for comfortable swimmers.
Getting there
Haleʻiwa is on the North Shore, across the island from Waikiki, so plan the drive into your day. Some tours sell packages that include Waikiki transport.
Quick answers
Do I need scuba experience for an Oahu shark tour?
No. Cage tours use a mask and snorkel at the surface, and no diving experience is needed.
What sharks will I see on the North Shore?
Cage tours usually see Galapagos and sandbar sharks. The cage-free pelagic tour reports gray reef, scalloped hammerhead and tiger sharks.
Can kids do a shark cage tour?
Yes on some tours. One cage tour takes kids from age 3 and lets non-swimmers watch from the boat; another starts at age 5.
